Fran Yoakum Veal

Hendersonville High School Class of '81

Band, Flag Corps, Beta Club, Honor Society

Hobbies:  Music, Reading, Writing (well, duh), Hanging out with friends, Aerobics, Boys (is that really a hobby?), going to the mall, dancing, going to football games, working at my Dad's ice cream shop (although can you really count slave labor as a hobby?)

Biggest fear:  That someone might find out how shy I was, although it was probably pretty obvious to everyone, anyway!

Most embarrassing moment: When my dad asked Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge boys what he did for a living.  I could have DIED!

First Kiss:  Ricky Humprheys at the movie theater.

Best HS Moments:  Winning first place at Contest of Champions marching band competition, marching in the Indie 500 parade, sitting at the lunch table with friends talking about everything and nothing, going to the lake to listen to music and hang out.

Favorite books/authors:  Terry Brooks, Sword of Shannara series

My advice to you:  Don't take yourself too seriously, and make the most of every moment.

Sheenah Freitas

Class of 2007

Occupational Plans: Originally wanted to be a pharmacist up until my junior year. When I was a senior, I decided to pursue writing

Clubs: Special Wish, Latin, Drama

Hobbies: Reading, writing, webdesign/maintaining a fan website, art

Biggest fear: Spiders. Just keep them away from me and I will be fine.

Most embarrassing moment: I must have blocked all embarrassing moments from my brain to protect me. I know that I’ve had many, but can’t seem to recall one. >.<

Best moment: On one of my Special Wish events, we bought a bunch of presents and delivered them to a fire station. The guys there loaded their truck with the gifts, someone dressed as Santa, and we all went to this little girl’s house to surprise her. Because of her leukemia treatments, her parents were short on cash and couldn’t really afford to buy presents that year for Christmas, so we decided to fix that.

Favorite book: The Harry Potter series. Potterheads, unite!

My advice to you: Sometimes the best thing for you is to take the road less traveled. It might be scary, it might be unconventional, but you’ll make it out okay.

Bill Hiatt

Class of 1974

Nickname: Lightning [Was he a fast runner, or was the nickname a reference to his dating history, since “Lightning never strikes twice in the same place”? I’ll let you ponder that question.]

Occupational Plans: teaching or law [The idea of being a writer came just a little bit later.]

Extracurricular Activities and Achievements: valedictorian, ASB president, debate team captain, Spanish honor society president

Hobbies: reading, creative writer [If you are looking at the last two sections and thinking, “Wow, what a nerd!” you are absolutely correct—but remember, nerds make the best authors in the long run!]

Favorite Musicians: Olivia Newton-John, Cher, Barry White, Billy Joel

Favorite Authors: Ursula K. LeGuin, Andre Norton, J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft [with a lot more added in the years since!]

Most Embarrassing Moment: when his ex-girlfriend went to the prom with his best friend

Advice to Future Classes: “Always pursue your dreams.” [In a more marginally more practical future, he revised that quote to “Always pursue your dreams…but have a plan B!]
